But not too different.
My original intention was to continue with the BLO saga via a detour to the Lijadu Sisters, but for the past two days I've been trying to upload some video clips and YouTube is all acting brand new with me.
Meanwhile, my man dafriquan just asked me when the hell I'm gonna post the rest of the Ofege records, so I know that some cats are feening for some rawk.
So just to keep things moving, I'm gonna post some rawk. From Africa. But not from Nigeria.
This is an album that's been floating around some of the psychedelic rock blogs, so maybe some of you have already heard it. If you haven't, I envy you; for I would love to go back and relish once again the first delirious time I heard the Zambian band called The W.I.T.C.H (as in "We Intend To Cause Havoc").
(Needless to say, they fulfill this intention wonderfully)
This is their album Lazy Bones, from 1975.

Have you ever heard Nomo's version of "La La La"?
Also, is it me, or is that the happiest sounding song ever about heartache? For a guy who's "heart is filled with pain", he sounds fairly happy.
wow... Nomo has a version of "La La La"? i haven't kept up with them in a while... i used to check out their MySpace page all the time, but i think i lost track at some point. (do they have an album out yet?)
LOL i gotta agree... "La La La" does sound pretty damn jubilant for a song about being in pain! but to some degree, that discrepancy between tone and theme is a feature of a lot of African music... you find minor-key songs about happiness and joy and upbeat songs about misery!
afkap..
You're saving me from spending cash on ebay! thanks once more. You need to get hold of the Flames from South Africa if you haven't heard them...more soul and sixties but definitely in this space
Yeah, Nomo's got two albums out...both are quite good. They've got a self-titled debut, and then last year they released "New Tones".
I prefer their debut. It's more of a traditional afrobeat song, with some jazz influences sprinkled in. It's got a ton of those great moments that I love about afrobeat...where the music builds and builds and builds...then all of the sudden the horns kick in (for example), and the goosebumps emerge on my arms and I want to jump out of my chair.
"New Tones" is more restrained, and seems pretty heavily influenced by Konono No. 1. They seem more interested in creating new sounds using homemade instruments than they do in creating "goose bump" moments. It's still a damn good album though.
I'll upload both sometime this week and give you the links.
Matt:
i know how some of these eBay record dealers can try to suck every drop of blood out of your being, so if i can save you from some of that, i'm glad to be of service!
but The Flames, though... The Flames... The Flames from South Africa. it's ringing a bell for me somewhat, but i dunno... did you ever post any of their stuff on Matsuli? (or maybe i saw it on Aduna or somewhere...)
kristopher:
man, that would be quite princely of you if you could hook those Nomo joints! (of course, i will still probably end up buying them sometime down the line... supporting indie bands is paramount!)
