Oliver de Coque (1947-2008)

Just heard the news.

More to come as I learn it.

R.I.P.

Thanks to John B. for furnishing us with this mp3 of Oliver's biggest hit, "Identity"

I just heard the news and came to see to your blog to see if you heard it too. Feels like all our music legends are slowly disappearing. First Osadebe then Sunny...

... I'd been thinking of doing a post on Oliver de Coque since I heard his 'Funny Money Identity' again on my trip to Enugu a few months ago but I couldn't remember the lyrics like I used to so I had been putting it off.

But alas! I guess I have no excuses now than to just do it.

That song was my first real intro to the Oliver de Coque.

Brother mine, do you have that song? or 'Opportunity' or 'People's Club' or 'Mbiri ka Mbiri'

He will be missed.

I am very sad to hear the death of Oliver De Coque in South Africa. I am one of his admirers more especially, his voice, guiter and maverick attitude of performance on stage. He will be greatly missed all over the world and most importantly in Igbo land where we come from.We have lost a super star, music icon and OKE MMANWU. Rest in peace Oliver.

I was privileged to see Oliver about 1985 in Oakland as some small Masonic hall on Lake Merritt. They came out and did a 20 minute sound check that would blow 99% of the bands on the planet off the stage. I was knocked out and have bought his releases whenever possible. Quite the loss.
